Very Olde St. Nick "Super Freak" Single Barrel
Super Freak is a blended expression from Preservation Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky — a one-of-a-kind bottling built by marrying barrels of low-entry-proof Kentucky bourbon (corn, rye, and malted barley mash bill) with their most concentrated, deeply matured stocks. The standard release balances younger casks with 18-year barrels to achieve the viscosity and depth of a super-aged pour while retaining the approachability of a younger spirit — balance being the whole point of the blend.
When we caught wind that Preservation was releasing a rare single barrel version of Super Freak, we headed straight to the distillery to pick it ourselves. And this one is something else entirely: unlike the standard blend, this single barrel release is built with stocks reaching up to 21 years of age — pushing the Super Freak concept into territory it's never occupied before.
