Description
Sol Tarasco Charanda Añejo Rum — 750ml
An aged expression of Mexico's most underrated spirits category.
Sol Tarasco is a label out of Casa Tarasco, the historic Pacheco family distillery in Uruapan, Michoacán — the same family behind the well-known Uruapan Charanda line. While their Uruapan releases focus on the unaged and blended side of the house, Sol Tarasco represents the aged, oak-matured side of their craft, drawing on the same century-plus of distilling tradition.
This Añejo expression spends time resting in oak barrels, picking up the structured sweetness and warm spice that define the Charanda Añejo style.
What Is Charanda?
Charanda is a Mexican spirits Denomination of Origin (D.O.) — protected, regulated, and produced exclusively in sixteen designated municipalities of Michoacán. Like tequila and mezcal, it cannot legally be called Charanda if it's made anywhere else in the world.
Distilled from sugarcane grown in the iron-rich red volcanic soil that gives the category its name (charanda means "red-colored soil" in the indigenous Purépecha language), the spirit shares DNA with rhum agricole and cachaça, but expresses a uniquely Mexican character shaped by Michoacán's high-altitude terroir.
About the Añejo Designation
Within the Charanda category, Añejo denotes a rum that has undergone meaningful aging in oak — typically yielding a deeper amber color, softer texture, and layered notes of caramel, vanilla, dried fruit, and gentle oak spice. It's the expression to reach for when you want Charanda character with the polish of barrel time.
Tasting Profile
Expect classic aged-rum hallmarks layered over Charanda's distinctive sugarcane backbone:
- Nose: Warm caramel, vanilla, dried tropical fruit
- Palate: Oak-influenced sweetness with cane juice character underneath, soft baking spice
- Finish: Smooth and warming, with a clean Michoacán mineral note
How HI PROOF Recommends Drinking It
Sol Tarasco Añejo shines neat or over a single large cube — its oak character rewards slow sipping. It also brings something different to aged-rum cocktails like an Old Fashioned variation or a stirred Daiquiri, where its Mexican identity sets it apart from Caribbean rums.
For collectors building a comprehensive Mexican spirits shelf, this is the natural companion to your tequila and mezcal lineup — a third pillar that completes the picture.
About the Producer
For over a century, the Pacheco family has been producing Charanda in Uruapan, Michoacán — widely regarded as the most authoritative voice in the category. Casa Tarasco operates as the home of both the Uruapan and Sol Tarasco labels, with each line representing a different facet of the family's distilling philosophy.
