Eagle Rare 10 Year Bourbon — Buffalo Trace Distillery
Eagle Rare Aged 10 Years is a straight Kentucky bourbon whiskey distilled and bottled by Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, and owned by Sazerac Company. Released in 1975 and elevated to cult status after its 2005 reformulation at 90 proof, Eagle Rare 10 is widely regarded as one of the best value age-stated bourbons on the American whiskey market — when you can find it at MSRP.
Hi Proof is proud to offer Eagle Rare 10 at our everyday low retail price of $45.90, well below the secondary market average of $80–$120.

Tasting Notes
Nose: Honey, toffee, and dried orange peel open to soft cocoa, vanilla cream, and a light floral-mint note characteristic of Buffalo Trace Mashbill #1. Faint leather and oak rackhouse aromas develop with air.
Palate: Medium-bodied and silky. Vanilla frosting and caramel lead, followed by candied almond, baked pear, and dark cherry. A gentle wave of oak tannin and baking spice — clove, cinnamon, a touch of mint — rounds out the mid-palate.
Finish: Dry, warm, and lingering. Lasting notes of cocoa nib, toasted oak, and a whisper of orange zest.
Best Enjoyed: Neat in a Glencairn glass, with a single large ice cube, or in a classic Old Fashioned or Manhattan where the bourbon's honeyed depth truly shines.
Why Eagle Rare 10 Is So Hard to Find
Despite its modest $40 MSRP, Eagle Rare 10 has become one of the most allocated bourbons in America. Demand from collectors, bartenders, and cocktail enthusiasts regularly outstrips Buffalo Trace's production capacity. Retail shelves are often empty, and aftermarket prices frequently exceed $100 per bottle. At Hi Proof, we source Eagle Rare through our direct distributor allocation as a top-ranked independent spirits retailer, allowing us to offer this bourbon at honest retail pricing whenever it's in stock.
Eagle Rare History — What Makes It Different
Eagle Rare was introduced in 1975 by Seagram's under master distiller Charles L. Beam — grandnephew of the legendary Jim Beam — originally as a 101-proof, 10-year-old bourbon designed to compete with Wild Turkey. Sazerac Company acquired the brand in 1989 and moved production to the Buffalo Trace Distillery after acquiring it in 1992.
In 2005, Sazerac reformulated Eagle Rare 10 from 101 proof to its current 90 proof and designated it a single barrel expression. In 2019, the "single barrel" language was removed from the label after bottling was moved from the hand-bottled Blanton's Bottling House to Buffalo Trace's high-speed automated line, where trace residue between barrels is unavoidable. Each bottle, however, still contains bourbon drawn predominantly from a single barrel aged a minimum of 10 years.
How Eagle Rare 10 Compares
- vs. Buffalo Trace Bourbon: Same mashbill and proof, but Eagle Rare carries a guaranteed 10-year age statement vs. Buffalo Trace's unspecified ~7–9 years. Eagle Rare shows deeper caramel, more oak structure, and a longer finish.
- vs. Blanton's Single Barrel: Blanton's uses Mashbill #2 (higher rye), is bottled at 93 proof, with no age statement. Eagle Rare is older but softer; Blanton's is spicier and more floral.
- vs. Eagle Rare 17 (BTAC): The 17-year release is a limited annual drop in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection at ~$100 SRP, with dramatically more oak, tobacco, and dried fruit. Eagle Rare 10 is the accessible everyday bourbon; the 17 is a once-a-year collector piece.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Eagle Rare 10 still a single barrel bourbon?
Functionally yes — each bottle is drawn from a single barrel — but Buffalo Trace removed the "single barrel" statement from the label in 2019 after switching to automated bottling, where minor blending between adjacent barrels can occur on the line.
What is the mashbill of Eagle Rare 10?
Eagle Rare uses Buffalo Trace's proprietary Mashbill #1, widely understood to contain less than 10% rye, with the balance being corn and malted barley. The exact ratios are not publicly disclosed.
What proof is Eagle Rare 10?
90 proof (45% ABV). The original 1975–2005 release was 101 proof, but was lowered when the brand was designated a single barrel expression.
What's the difference between Eagle Rare 10 and Buffalo Trace?
Both use Mashbill #1 at 90 proof, but Eagle Rare carries a 10-year age statement and is selected from more mature barrels, producing a richer, oakier profile with a longer finish.
Is Eagle Rare 10 worth it at MSRP?
Yes — at its ~$40 MSRP, Eagle Rare 10 is widely considered one of the best value 10-year bourbons in production, offering age-stated Kentucky bourbon from a world-class distillery at a price that's hard to match.
