We tasted two sister barrels side by side: #394 and #395. Both were hazmat. Both were exceptional. You may have already seen #395 land in the California market. Our pick was #394, the higher proof of the two, and it came down to one word: balance.

Then came the bad news. After a full 10 years in oak, the barrel yielded just 66 bottles. Nobody expects an angel's share like this out of Oregon, but this barrel gave up most of itself over the decade, and what was left behind is remarkably concentrated.

What surprised us most is what hazmat usually takes away. At 143 proof, heat should be running the show. Here it doesn't. Dried fruit, dark chocolate, and rich malted barley come through clearly, with the heat staying restrained from start to finish. It drinks like a whiskey far below its proof, with all the depth of one well above it.

A 10-year American single malt is rare. A hazmat one is rarer. A balanced one, in a run of 66 bottles, is about as rare as it gets.
